Approximately 1.5 million Iraqis remain internally displaced inside of Iraq. International efforts to provide assistance and find solutions for these persons have increased over the last year as the humanitarian access has improved. In Diyala Province U.S. supported efforts have helped thousands of Iraqis voluntarily return to their villages. In Baghdad the UN Refugee Agency and its international and local partners are finally providing emergency assistance to the most vulnerable Iraqis living as squatters in slum areas.
