Rwanda 2005: A fuel-efficient stove in Nyabiheke camp

10/31/2005

Refugees complain about a lack of wood at Nyabiheke camp. In response, the American Refugee Committee, which built and runs the camp, is introducing fuel efficient stoves. They use half the wood of an open fire, reduce the smoke that chokes many refugee camps and diminishes the risk of fire and burns to children. The stoves can be made of mud in about 45 minutes. Currently about 40% of the camp has fuel efficient stoves, and the entire camp should have them by the end of November.
