Job Summary
The McCall-Pierpaoli Fellowship was
created to enable former refugees
who are currently attending or recent graduates of colleges and
universities to learn to become effective advocates on humanitarian
issues, analyze humanitarian situations and support advocacy for
solutions. The fellowship will provide an opportunity for a
student to absorb first-hand how Refugees International makes a
difference on humanitarian issues. Fellows will work closely with our
professional staff to research humanitarian issues, analyze
humanitarian situations and advocate for solutions. The fellowship is
named for our fallen colleagues, Penny and David McCall and Yvette
Pierpaoli, whose efforts to save lives and improve conditions of
refugees in Southeast Asia, Africa and the Balkans were unparalleled.
Job Duties
1. Assist in ongoing advocacy efforts of Refugees International (RI) by conducting research, representing RI at coordination meetings, writing issue briefs and website articles, and participating in strategy development sessions.
2. Conduct region or issue-specific
projects as assigned.
3. Develop and complete a project and/or presentation that furthers RI’s advocacy agenda and demonstrates the spirit of the McCall-Pierpaoli Fellowship.
4. Conduct one humanitarian assessment mission and follow-up advocacy.
5. Support field missions (before, during and after) by other members of the advocacy team as needed.
Primary Internal/External Contacts
The Fellow will have contact with
all RI staff and work directly with
the Advocacy Department. The fellow will also attend
external meetings with non-governmental organizations and government
officials.
Requirements
1. All candidates must be former
refugees or must be the children of a refugee
family.
2. Candidates must have completed their education relatively recently, either at undergraduate or graduate level. They should be at the outset of their careers in humanitarian work.
3. Candidates must be eligible to work 40 hours per week during the academic year.
4. All candidates must have an interest in humanitarian issues and a commitment to a career in the international field.
