Refugees International is recruiting a Peacekeeping Program Manager who will be responsible for developing and overseeing all aspects of the peacekeeping program at Refugees International, while contributing substantially to the Program’s overall advocacy output. The position supervises two professional staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
(S)he will work within the framework of the agency strategic plan, to develop an overall Refugees International peacekeeping program, consisting of long-term and mid-term objectives, and the advocacy strategies to achieve them. Manage the implementation of this program in collaboration with other peacekeeping staff and agency colleagues.
(S)he will develop a multi-year budget for the peacekeeping program and develop foundation proposals to garner support for it in collaboration with the fundraising department, and meet with potential donors and write reports to funders as needed.
(S)he will represent Refugees International to the global community of organizations and individuals working on peacekeeping; build a network for RI --- with the United Nations, with U.S. civilian and military officials, and with international experts --- that advances the agency’s objectives in the peacekeeping area.
(S)he will lead the agency’s work towards building U.S. government understanding and support for international peacekeeping and stabilization operations, especially among senior officials of the Departments of State and Defense and members of the U.S. Congress.
(S)he will be able to produce high quality advocacy materials based on desk and field research.
(S)he will supervise the staff of the peacekeeping program, assuring the development of a balanced and effective team to achieve RI’s overall objectives in the peacekeeping area.
(S)he will collaborate with colleagues in the Program Department to advance agency thinking on key issues and to support the achievement of the agency’s overall mission.

Candidate Profile
1. A minimum of ten years’ professional experience involving some combination of direct involvement with peacekeeping missions, military service, and academic or policy work. Prior experience with the non-governmental sector in the United States is advantageous.
2. An academic qualification in peacekeeping, conflict resolution or similar discipline, preferably at the Masters level or above.
3. Strong network among the institutions and individuals involved in international peacekeeping, especially at the United Nations and in the United States.
4. Experience and expertise in the U.S. policy making process in the peacekeeping area.
5. Prior supervisory experience, preferably in a non-profit setting.
6. Exceptional communication skills, especially writing and public speaking. A strong publications record is preferred.
7. English language fluency is required; a working knowledge of another language of value to the agency’s overseas work, such as French or Arabic, is advantageous.
8. Ability to work well with others in small teams.
9. Willingness and ability to travel to dangerous and isolated places up to three months per year.
10. Flexibility and sense of humor.

Purpose: In close collaboration with the Vice President for Policy and program staff, The Director of Advocacy is the lead campaign strategist for Refugees International to help ensure that the agency achieves its overall objectives in its priority goal areas. The position directly supervises staff focusing on advocacy with the United Nations in New York and with Congress and the administration.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Working within the framework of the agency strategic plan, in close collaboration with the Vice President for Policy and program staff, oversee the development and implementation of advocacy strategies to meet overall objectives in the priority goal areas of Refugees International. These include response to neglected crises, return and recovery, internal displacement, peacekeeping, and statelessness.
2. Conduct periodic reviews of progress towards overall advocacy objectives and, in consultation with relevant staff, adjust strategies and tactics as appropriate.
3. Supervise staff dedicated to advocacy work with the United Nations Security Council, the UN Secretariat, and UN agencies in New York and with Congress and the administration in Washington, ensuring that their efforts are in keeping with the agency’s priorities.
4. Coordinate and develop enhanced advocacy within Europe, including with UN agencies , the European Commission, and European governments.
5. Work closely with the Director of Communications to assure that advocacy messages are reflected in RI’s press statements and on RI’s website.
6. Work with the communications department to design Take Action campaigns as appropriate.
7. Advise program staff on advocacy strategies related to the priority goal areas as well as to country-specific issues that arise from overseas assessment missions. Participate in advocacy meetings with colleagues as appropriate.
8. Represent Refugees International at coordination meetings relevant to the agency’s advocacy priorities organized by NGOs, the U.S. government, the UN, think tanks, and other institutions.
9. Working with a colleague or with an external consultant, conduct periodic assessments of humanitarian crises and the level and causes of displacement. Assess the impact of crises on particular individuals and communities through interviews with the displaced. Conduct interviews with other individuals knowledgeable about the situation, including NGO and UN personnel and government officials.
10. Produce high quality advocacy materials based on desk and field research. These are typically short two-page bulletins, and/or longer policy reports when appropriate, with clear and credible recommendations that are the starting point for personal and agency advocacy initiatives to ensure implementation.
11. Participate, preferably as a speaker/panelist, in conferences and seminars focused on issues of concern to RI.
12. In collaboration with staff focused on Congressional advocacy, seek opportunities to prepare and present Congressional testimony.
13. Collaborate with colleagues in the Program Department to advance agency thinking on key issues and to support the achievement of the agency’s overall mission.
14. Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Candidate Profile
1. Significant professional experience involving work on policy and advocacy campaigns for a non-governmental organization, think tank, Congressional office, or similar institution, preferably with a focus on issues related to displacement and humanitarian action.
2. Professional experience overseas in humanitarian work, preferably with refugees and internally displaced people. Familiarity with the UN and non-governmental organizations involved in humanitarian response.
3. An academic qualification in international affairs, area studies, humanitarian action, or related field, preferably at the Masters level or above.
4. Expert knowledge of the United Nations and how its policy making bodies function.
5. Expertise in the U.S. policy making process, especially within Congress, the U.S. State Department, and the National Security Council.

Purpose: This position provides leadership and support in planning, implementing, and tracking strategies to expand Refugees International’s Individual Giving Program. S/he will devise, manage, develop and deliver a range of segmented giving programs to generate new income and maximize existing income through high-level giving. The Individual Giving Officer supports development efforts by continuing to grow RI’s individual giving program, with specific emphasis on cultivation and solicitation of family foundations and major gifts of $5,000-$100,000. S/he plans and implements strategies to engage Board members and other volunteers in fundraising activities, and supports followup to donor cultivation events. The Individual Giving Officer also plans and implements an in-house direct response program and further is responsible for relevant reconciliation processes between the fundraising and finance departments.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. To identify, research and motivate prospects and donors to embrace and support the mission and programs RI
2. Establish planning and implementation strategies to cultivate and solicit donors of $5,000-$100,000
3. Cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of funders to achieve agreed fundraising targets (with the anticipated income of $500,000 in the first year)
4. To devise new and innovative approaches to recruit people to join leadership giving programs including devising an individual giving and upgrade strategy for fundraising from event participants, Circle members and other constituent groups
5. To upgrade existing funders through personalized solicitation and stewardship
6. Leverage Annual Gala fundraising efforts through targeted and increased individual and corporate cultivation and outreach in coordination with the events manager and the Gala Committee
7. Develop strategies for an integrated leadership giving program that encompasses direct mail, on-line giving and individual donors
8. Participate in the development of a planned giving program
9. To develop, commission and edit promotional and stewardship documents for leadership giving groups and to create and implement stewardship activities.
10. To develop close contacts with potential donors of $5,000-$100,000, and be able to communicate clearly and with enthusiasm the case for making a donation to Refugees International
11. To liaise with the Financial Administrator/Database Coordinator to ensure that all gifts receive appropriate acknowledgment
12. Other duties as directed by the Director of Development
Qualifications
Preferred candidates will have two-three years experience in individual or major gifts ($1,000-$100,000), as well as a solid track record in donor relations. Strong written and oral skills are essential for this position as well as the ability to think creatively. This post requires demonstrated skills in identifying and researching donor prospects; proven record of fundraising success; and an ability to function well both as part of a closely woven team and with independent initiative.
1. Proven experience of working in a fundraising environment, preferably with experience of direct marketing, or face-to-face solicitation.
2. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage a range of projects simultaneously and deliver to deadlines and under pressure.

Purpose: The Events Manager will design and implement special events and cultivation and fundraising activities, targeting individual and corporate donors. This position will work closely with the Development Committee, Gala Co-Chairs, and other lead volunteers to shape the vision for the events program. S/he will manage a comprehensive programe of events and will oversee all logistics including securing all event suppliers; negotiating best rates; ensuring contracts are signed; pre-event briefings and on the night management. This role requires innovation and creativity in designing an active and diverse series of cultivation and educational events which will attract new corporate sponsorship. There is scope for 3 major cultivation events per year, along with 6-8 stewardship events around the country to help engage new supporters for RI. S/he will also design and implement a corporate solicitation strategy. The anticipated income from this post is in excess of $1 million from event activities and sponsorship.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develop a comprehensive events program which incorporates new events targeted at a diverse range of supporters, and enhances our already successful annual Gala, Circles, and Special Events. An anticipated 3 major events, along with 6-8 stewardship events (ranging from intimate dinners targeted at high-end prospects, to Golf tournaments, and Fashion shows) per year are anticipated to help engage new supporters for RI.
2. Develop timelines and coordinate all details of logistics, program design and materials for all events to maximize income revenue streams by soliciting corporate and individual sponsorship, ensuring timely and well-administered ticket and table sales; securing donations of gifts/auction items and securing donations and gift in kind.
3. Develop corporate sponsorship strategy for RI, and solicit donations to increase organizational income.
4. Manage all aspects of the Annual Gala from fundraising to event management in co-ordination with the Gala Committee. Manage all aspects of the Gala Committee, and other event volunteers including regular contact with the Gala Chair and Gala Executive Committee, setting meetings, taking minutes and ensuring all actions are followed up.
5. Assist in development of a donor-relations program and work closely with the Individual Giving Officer to identify attendees whose donations can be upgraded, and form new relationships for the organization through cultivation and solicitation.
6. Oversee the design and production of all event-related communications and logistics through liaison with the both external and internal clients.
7. Pursue follow up activities designed to increase donations from attendees and sponsors and undertake thorough post-event evaluation, including written event follow-up and active post-event solicitation and stewardship.
8. Explore ways new collaborations and partnership to increase outreach by expansion of RI Circles and other one-off events including exploring expansion of activities in San Francisco, London, Sun Valley, Idaho, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and New York. etc.
9. Work closely with colleagues on Board liaison including venue and logistics for two Board meetings a year—one in D.C. and one in New York City.
10. Representing development office internally and RI, at external functions, as needed, and other duties as required by the Director of Development.
Qualifications
The Event Manager must possess special events experience and a positive attitude and a high level of commitment and enthusiasm for fundraising. S/he must demonstrate a strong ability to work with a diverse range of people, and will manage time and multiple priorities.
1. Demonstrated experience with increasingly successful events of $10,000-$500,000 over three to five years. Strong understanding of best practices as relates to fundraising through special events.
2. Extensive events planning and implementation and donor relations experience.
3. Experience in soliciting corporate, foundation, or individual donations.
4. Excellent writing, communications and strategic thinking skills, as well as problem solving abilities.
5. Excellent volunteer and donor relations skills.
6. Innovative, self-motivated with ability to juggle competing priorities and strong attention to detail.

8. Experience managing budgets and volunteers.
