Advocacy for Spain

What is Happening?

Spain has recently seen a sharp rise in the number of people seeking safety, especially displaced Venezuelans and others from the Americas and unprecedented numbers of people sailing the Atlantic Ocean to reach the Canary Islands. With EU support, Spain has sought to address the resulting strain on its asylum system and, collaborating in the Safe Mobility Office initiative, accepted Nicaraguans for resettlement. However, Spain’s aggressive tactics at its borders and externalization of asylum responsibilities mirror concerning trends across Europe.

What Must Be Done?

Refugees International is calling for access to a fair asylum process for all people seeking safety in Spain and increased availability of legal pathways, especially for people from North and West Africa.
