Biden Admin Must Reverse Trump’s Unpopular Anti-Asylum Rule

Please see below statement from Refugees International’s Senior U.S. Advocate Yael Schacher:

“With forty days left in his tenure, President Trump continues to slam the door on asylum seekers. Today, his administration finalized its most restrictive regulation yet  – despite tens of thousands of public comments, many from legal experts and human rights groups, opposing the measure.

As Refugees International has previously reported, the new rule dramatically curtails eligibility for asylum by barring or discrediting broad categories of claims and making it extremely difficult for asylum seekers to get a fair or full hearing. The rule violates both the spirit and the letter of U.S. and international refugee law—and Refugees International will support federal court challenges to its implementation.

The Biden administration must make ensuring access to asylum a day one priority, publish its intent to rescind the rule, and reassume responsibility to protect those seeking refuge from persecution.”
